We are a consultancy group of microtechnology scientists and engineers, with offices in Seattle and Minneapolis. Our experience with applications of integrated fluidic circuits dates back to 1994, close to the origin of this exciting new field. We bring a depth of knowledge of sensor development, assay development, and dynamic simulation of coupled mass/thermal diffusion and chemical reaction to our customers' projects. We aim to be a one-stop destination for anybody interested in design and modeling of processes in micro-spaces.

Our small and flexible team of internationally renowned experts has experience, not only in our scientific fields, but also in project and technology management, intellectual property, and business development. In addition, we have established a network of outside academic and industry experts in many related areas, and are able to quickly bring in additional expertise as needed.

Our proprietary TADS TM software, in conjunction with our fast, Linux-based workstations, allows us to simulate physical processes as they evolve over time that are characteristic of micro-devices, such as convective and molecular diffusion, particle flow, as well as multiple simultaneous chemical reactions with or without mobile or stationary catalysts.

All our projects are kept in strict confidentiality, with all IP developed during the course of a project normally being assigned to the customer. Typical projects include, for example, the design and modeling of various versions of a multi-layer optical sensor for human diagnostic applications, engineering of microscale devices that provide solid support for nanoscale molecular structures for quantitation and isolation of DNA, or the development of an integrated fluidic circuit for process control applications.

Our dynamic organizational structure allows us to respond rapidly to changing customer needs during development cycles, while minimizing overhead to ensure our clients receive maximum value. Our networked offices allow us to conduct meetings, either virtual or in person, among ourselves and/or with our customers, as needed.


Bernhard H Weigl, Ph.D.

Dr. Bernhard H Weigl is one of the original founders of MicroPlumbers Microsciences LLC. He is an inventor on more than 30 patents and patent applications in microfluidics, and has published over 60 scientific papers on microfluidics, sensor design, and analytical instrumentation. He received an M.Sc and a Ph.D., both with distinction, in Analytical Chemistry from Karl-Franzens-University, Graz, Austria, where he also gathered post-doctoral experience as well as at the Optoelectronic Research Centre, University of Southampton, England.

Bernhard now leads the Diagnostics Development Group at the non-profit organization P.A.T.H. in Seattle and is an Affiliate Professor at the University of Washington, Seattle. As he travels around the world to address conferences, his luggage often includes a kiteboard.

Ron L Bardell, Ph.D.

Ron Bardell is also one of the original founders of MicroPlumbers Microsciences LLC. He has twenty-three years of experience in modeling of coupled fluid-flow, diffusion/convection of heat/mass, and reaction of chemical species. Over the years, his analysis assignments have ranged from the motion of Navy ships in rough seas to the behavior of varying-viscosity fluids in channels smaller in diameter than a human hair. He has extensive experience writing scientific software such as TADS TM (a finite-volume heat/mass transfer and chemical reaction modeling package) and as well as user functions to extend the modeling capabilities of several commercial computational fluid-dynamics codes including CFX (now part of ANSYS), PHOENICS, and CFD-ACE+. He holds a BME from the University of Minnesota and an MSME and PhD from the University of Washington, Seattle, where he did research in micro-valve and micro-pump modeling and development. He is an inventor/author on multiple patents and numerous scientific publications. Born in Minneapolis, not that far from Lake Wobegon, he worked as a drummer in rock&roll and funk bands for eight years before switching to engineering. He now plays piano and rides bikes for fun. Nigel Rudra Sharma, M.S.E.E.

Nigel Sharma is a partner at MicroPlumbers Microsciences LLC. His many years of experience in micro-scale research and development began in 1993 with electrochemical sensors and continued into microvalves and micropumps. He has extensive experience in microfabrication, including mask generation, silicon and glass processing, as well as micromachining of glass, metals, and plastics. His skills in experimental design include electronic, hydraulic, and optical measurement systems. He holds a BSEE from Seattle University and an MSEE from the University of Washington, Seattle. Originally from Lautoka, Fiji, he is an avid hiker wherever he travels around the world. Within MicroPlumbers Microsciences LLC, he handles:

  • Electronic circuit design


Anatoli L Lukyanov, Ph.D.

Dr. Lukyanov has twenty-two years of experience in design, formulation and characterization of particulate drug delivery systems for a broad variety of pharmaceutical agents. He is skilled in developing and using numerous physicochemical characterization techniques, and performing experiments to investigate biodistribution and efficiency, data collection, analyses, interpretation, and presentation. His M.S. degree is from Moscow Institute of Fine Chemical Technology and Ph.D. from the National Academy of Health Sciences, Moscow. During a weather emergency (ie., a sunny day in Seattle) you can find him sailing Puget Sound. Within MicroPlumbers Microsciences LLC, he handles:
  • Bead-based chemistry, reagent development, and characterization
  • Micelle-based reagent development
  • Conjugation of immunochemicals
  • Novel labeling reagents and strategy

Lynn Seifried, M.S.M.S.

A medical device development professional, Lynn Seifried has over 20 years of experience in materials research, product development, and program management of Class II and Class III devices, including pacemakers, defibrillators, and diagnostic equipment based on microfluidics technology. She has proven performance in conducting and coordinating the applied research, product design, process development, and manufacturing setup for many successful products and has demonstrated a particular ability to identify and correct root problems that might otherwise prohibit product success. An Iowa farmer's daughter, she earned a music degree in vocal performance and moved to Minneapolis, intending to become rich and famous as an opera singer, before becoming excited about science. She holds a Masters degree in Material Science from the University of Minnesota and is a published author and an inventor on many patents. Within MicroPlumbers Microsciences LLC, she handles:
